Chewy was nice enough to send us a box of the all new fresh step for review. However, this does not in any way sway our review of this product.
We are a multi cat household so we use litter hard and we go through A LOT in one month. So I was happy to have my crew put this new litter to the test. Here is what we found after spending some time using Fresh Step Febreze Freshness Gain Scent cat litter.
What is Fresh Step Febreze
This is an all new option in the Fresh Step lineup of litter. This formula is made with the power of Febreze Gain Original scent to help keep your cat’s litter box and your home smelling nice and fur-esh and contains activated charcoal to stop bacterial odor for up to 10 days.
The Ammonia Block Technology helps combat some of the strongest odors from feces and urine while the paw-activated fragrance releases every time your cat steps in her litter box. This Fresh Step litter has a unique ClumpLock technology that helps absorb liquid, keep odors contained on contact and create tight clumps that are easy to scoop! Plus, it’s 99.9% dust-free to help keep surfaces clean and allowing you and your cat to breathe with ease.

The Cons to Fresh Step Litter
Here are some of our criticisms of this litter.
- If you are sensitive to scented items this is NOT an unscented litter.
How is the Smell?
I knew this litter was gonna be good when I saw it had the gain scent added to it. Gain was the exact cleaning formula our Realtor told us to use when we sold our house. It has a universal fresh laundry smell that makes people feel at home. And ya know what? We ending up selling our house in a week.
The smell is nice and light and does remind you of the smell of laundry. As our litter box is placed in the laundry room this means for the first time ever the box smell just blended in with the room.
The cats were good with the smell too! It wasn’t too overpowering that it discouraged any litter box use. If you didn’t know cats are very sensitive smellers so never go with any heavily perfumed products around them.
Why Go With a Clumping Litter?
So clumping litters have two advantages. First they make cleaning the box easier. Once moisture is mix with a clumping litter it hardens and forms together. These made for easy scoops to identify and easy removal too.
Second is with clumping litter I find there is lest waste. You clean out the clumps your cat leaves you every day and top the box off and you are good. When you don’t have a clumping litter you would have to completely empty and refill the litter box more often.
It is important to note that even clumping litters should be completely replenished every so often. With our multi cat household we do this once a month or so.
Does FreshStep Work with Litter Robot?
As a litter robot box owner myself this is always a question at the forefront of my mind when assessing any litter. The good news, YES, it works flawlessly with the Litter Robot. The litter clumps quickly helping get those pee clumps right in the bin below. As well the litter easily sifts and doesn’t get caught in with the waste. We have tried other brands only to find that bunch of it ended up in the waste bin before it was even used.
Should I Switch Litter?
So far the new Fresh Step litter has been great, I like the smell vs our Arm and Hammer. It’s actually less overpowering yet still effective against all those lovely cat litter box smells.
I do want to see how it goes for a full month before converting the other boxes in our house but for the time being we will be keeping this box with the Fresh Step. If you have any question let us know in the comment section below.
